\chapter{The Bryn Mawr College Dissertation \LaTeX~Template}
The Bryn Mawr College (BMC) dissertation \LaTeX~template is hosted on overleaf and \href{https://github.com/cacsphysics/BMC_Dissertation_Template}{github}. The template is designed to work with \href{https://www.overleaf.com/for/authors}{Overleaf's} 2021 Live TeX system. The features of the template and the \LaTeX~ packages it calls are documented in the \href{https://github.com/cacsphysics/BMC_Dissertation_Template}{github} repository.
The template includes two options: double and bibconfig. The double option is needed to meet the BMC standards described in section \ref{sec:format}. The bibconfig is a rudimentary bibliographic reformatting that conforms with the BMC standards described in section \ref{sec:biblio}. Implementing the bibconfig will force you to edit the bib-items. If you want to configure your own bibliographic environment using the \verb|biblatex| macros I gathered documentation within a different \href{https://github.com/cacsphysics/BMC_Template_Info_Files}{github repository}.
\chapter{Pages}
\section{Title Page}
The title page must contain the date of degree and list the committee members. The date of degree is the year you are awarded the Ph.D., not the year you submit your dissertation. The Committee list starts with your dissertation advisor(s), with the indication of Advisor or Co-Advisor and your outside chair should only be identified by name. Only list an institution for committee members who are not affiliated with BMC.
\section{Copyright Page}
You automatically hold copyright in your dissertation whether or not you include the copyright notice (but there is not reason not to include it). No formal registration of your copyright is required. You may choose to register your copyright with the US Copyright office for a fee. Proquest will ask you if you would like them to file for you for $\$75$, or you can file yourself through the \href{https://www.copyright.gov/registration/}{Library of Congress} for $\$45$. Registration allows you to sue for statutory damages and attorney's fees following intentional infringement of your copyright.
Including a \href{https://creativecommons.org/licenses/}{Create Commons License}, you let readers know the terms under which they can use and adapt your dissertation. (Note that whether or not you include a CC license, others are entitled to limited use of your dissertation under the fair use doctrine; see below for links on fair use.)
\href{https://orcid.org/}{ORCID iDs} are free persistent digital identifiers that distinguish you from other researchers (for example, if you have the same name as another scholar).
\chapter{Formatting}
\section{Titles and Page Numbers}
Chapter titles should appear in the Table of Contents; section headings can appear in the Table of Contents. The \path{bmctemplate.sty} file automatically includes the table of contents. The template uses the \path{titletoc} package and if you want to edit the style of the table of contents I recommend reading through the documentation \href{https://github.com/cacsphysics/BMC_Template_Info_Files/blob/main/titlesec.pdf}{titlesec.pdf}.
Page numbers should be in lower-case Roman numerals for all pages until the start of Chapter 1, with the unnumbered copyright page as page i (the first page that shows the page number will be on the Abstract). Arabic numerals begin with Chapter 1 and continue through the rest of the dissertation. No other text except the page number should appear in the header or footer. The page numbers can be set with the command \path{pagenumbering{roman}} for Roman numerals and \path{pagenumbering{arabic}} for Arabic numerals.
\section{Format}\label{sec:format}
Margins should be $1in$ on all sides. The left-hand margin can be $1.5in$ for binding, as in this guide. Headings of the main section of the dissertation: Abstract, Acknowledgements, Table of Contents, List of Figures, and each chapter; should begin $2in$ from the top of the page.
The body text should be double-spaced, with the exception of long quotations (which should be offset and single-spaced), list of figures or appendices, text of footnotes or endnotes, and entries in your bibliography.
\section{Bibliographies}\label{sec:biblio}
Your bibliography (or References, or Works Cited), which should include all sources used in your dissertation, can follow the preferred citation style of your discipline. You can divide the bibliography among primary and secondary sources, and can include a list of abbreviations. Entries should be single spaced, with a double space between entries, and a hanging indent.~\parencite{schaffner_temporal_2014, batchelor_1953}

The \verb|biblatex| package is called within the \verb|bmctemplate.sty| file. This means you can use the biblatex commands to setup your bibliography.
To add a bibliographic resource file use the \verb|\addbibresource{biblio_file.bib}| command. And to print the bibliography and include it within the table of contents use \verb|\printbibliography[heading=bibintoc, title={Bibliography}]|.

\chapter{Dissertation Submission}
\section{Open Access Publication}
Your dissertation will be made openly available through the \href{https://repository.brynmawr.edu/}{BMC Repository}. You will also submit to \href{https://www.proquest.com/}{Proquest}, where your dissertation will be made available through the Proquest Digital Dissertation database. Both the BMC version and the Proquest version must be identical, and must include all text, images, tables, and appendices. A staff member in the library will check for required parts and formatting, and will approve publication to Proquest once you have uploaded your dissertation to Proquest.
\section{Embargo}
For both the BMC repository and Proquest, you can publish your dissertation immediately, or withhold dissemination for one or two years. If you do not place an embargo on the dissertation, it will be made openly available immediately and will be published to the Proquest Digital Dissertations database immediately. If you do place an embargo period and will automatically be made available openly at the end of the embargo.
